Oinousses is a cluster of 9 small islands to the east of Chios island, located between Chios & the Turkish shores. Most maps of Greece show this group of islands as a small . The largest island is called Egnoussa or Oinoussa and it has a great maritime tradition despite its small size. Egnoussa has a traditional architecture, lovely beaches, plenty of bays and a calm environment. Oinousses is a heaven for summer vacationer. It is believed that its name comes from the root of the word oinos (Oinos = wine).

Because of the heavy taxation imposed by the Ottomans, most of the locals became sailors; thus, the first commercial Greek steamboats were owned by Oinoussians, who wrote the first chapter of the history of modern Greek shipping. Most of them eventually became ship owners, and even today, some of the most well-recognized ship owners Worldwide come from Oinousses.
